Just north of Victoria, in the cozy little community of Brentwood Bay, lies the worldrenowned famous Butchart Gardens. These gardens, which first began to take shape in 1904, are perhaps the finest you will ever see. The Butchart Gardens' showpiece is their magnificent sunken garden, formerly a limestone quarry situated within the 130 acresestate. Several gardens comprise the 55 acre display garden including the historic rose garden, which contains over 250 varieties of roses. Other features include the Japanese garden which was begun in 1906, an Italian garden, numerous statuary, water features, and the Rose Carousel with 30 hand-carved animals designed for The Gardens and installed in 2009; the only Carousel on Vancouver Island.

In addition to its many gardens, the grounds of Butchart Gardens also are home to the Dining Room Restaurant (the former residence of the Butchart family), the Blue Poppy Restaurant, the Coffee Shop, Seed & Giftstore andand a plant identification center. One afternoon may not be enough time to fully enjoy all that these gardens have to offer; many visitors will choose to come back more than once in order to enjoy the full Butchart experience.

Insider's Tip: During the summerJuly and August, visitors can enjoyopen-air concerts in the garden every night of the week, as well as a fireworks displayon Saturday evenings. Check their schedule for more information. During the Christmas season, visitors can skate on an outdoor ice rink, and enjoy The Butchart Gardens' annual Christmas lights display, covering most of the 55 acres.
The Butchart Gardens is open every day at 9 a.m. (with the exception of Christmas Day when it opens at 1pm.) and closes at different hours depending on the season. See the hours of operation on their website for more information.

From there, you can follow the signs to the gardens, where you will find a free parking lot.
